The Children’s Heart Clinic surgeons perform over 400 cardiovascular surgeries annually at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. The cardiovascular surgical program began in 1974 and over 10,000 operations have been performed since its inception. We are the largest pediatric cardiovascular congenital program in Minnesota and serve patients from throughout the Upper Midwest. Our surgeons provide comprehensive surgical correction or palliation for all types of congenital heart disease, simple to complex. We participate in all of the national databases for tracking and reporting of surgical outcomes in an effort to continually provide the highest quality care to our patients. Cardiovascular surgical outcomes at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota are among the best in the country, specifically for complex operations, such as the Modified Norwood Procedure.
All cardiovascular surgeries and catheterizations are performed in specially designed rooms on the fourth floor Cardiovascular Care Center (CVCC) at Children’s Hospitals & Clinics of Minnesota (click here for a virtual tour). In our state of the art facilities, we have the capability of performing hybrid procedures, allowing catheter-based interventions and surgical operations to be performed in the same room under the same anesthetic. This specially designed room is unique to only a few institutions across the country. After surgery, patients are taken care of in the CVCC a few steps away from the operating room. Children’s is the only pediatric hospital in the region to provide all cardiac care, from admission to discharge within the same unit. These rooms have special patient family areas so that families can stay with their children during their post-operative recovery. In the CVCC, we have developed a multidisciplinary clinical care model to provide comprehensive, expert care for all of our patients. We are the only institution in the region that offers in-house cardiac intensive care physicians to provide specialist care and monitoring of patients 24/7. Our multidisciplinary team includes cardiac surgery, cardiology, cardiac critical care, cardiac nursing, pharmacy, pain & integrative medicine, respiratory therapy, occupational/physical therapy/feeding team, dietary, and others. Rounds are made twice daily on all patients to develop and implement a daily cohesive plan, providing continuity of care and improved outcomes. Parents and family members are invited to be present and participate in these rounds with the multidisciplinary team.
