Cardiothoracic Surgery

Our cardiovascular surgeons, Dr. Overman and Dr. Moga, consistently achieve the best patient surgical outcomes in the Upper Midwest, treating all forms of congenital heart disease and repair:

  • Norwood, Glenn and Fontan procedures for complex single ventricle defects such as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome
  • Complex neonatal repairs including arterial switch, repair of truncus arteriosus, repair of interrupted aortic arch, and total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage
  • Full range of repairs in infancy and childhood including repair of Tetralogy of Fallot, repair of atrioventricular septal defects, repair of coronary artery anomalies, as well as isolated atrial or ventricular septal defects
  • Valve surgery including repair or replacement, as well as Ross and Nikaidoh procedures
  • Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support for conditions causing severe myocardial dysfunction such as myocarditis or cardiomyopathy
  • All other forms of congenital heart disease repair

Cardiothoracic surgery is performed at Children's Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in Minneapolis, which has been designated an ELSO (Extracorporeal Life Support Organization) Center of Excellence demonstrating our multidisciplinary ECMO program's strong commitment to clinical outcomes, quality, and research.

Since its inception, The Children's Heart Clinic has performed over 8,000 operations.  Current annual volume is roughly 500 procedures, nearly 300 involving cardiopulmonary bypass ("open").  Approximately 40 percent of these procedures are performed in neonatal period, among the largest neonatal volumes in the central United States.  We participate in several national and international databases and research organizations to advance the principle of improving outcomes of patients with congenital heart disease.  These include the Society for Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database, the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database, the Pediatric Cardiac Care Consortium (PCCC), and several multi-institutional clinical studies as a member of the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society (CHSS).
